Curt, I think the key to fixing the maca issue of potential goiters is two things: 1) making sure the maca is “ROYAL” Maca rather than raw. The sun-cooking (gelatinizing) process of Royal Maca neutralizes both the harmful pathogens growing in raw maca (esp. fungi and bacterium which both flourish in damp powders such as raw maca) and the anti-digestion enzymes found in raw maca. 2) If your thyroid is having troubles producing hormones OR producing too many hormones, the problem of adding the iodine found in maca root is going to be like throwing gasoline onto a fire. The way to protect the thyroid is to add a food source of selenium such as Brazil nuts to your daily regiment. You would only want to eat a maximum of 2 in the morning and 2 in the evening because too much selenium can become toxic to the nervous system. 4 per day is a safe amount which will give you plenty of the important mineral without a chance of overdoing it. Avoid taking any supplements with selenium in them, however, since most supplements use a toxic form of selenium which will actually destroy the liver and thyroid. Selenium is used by the body in the creation of glutathione which most people are deficient in. Glutathione is used in massive amounts as the body’s “master” antioxidant for cleansing and neutralizing the free radicals produced during the thyroid’s creation of hormones. Many clinical trials and studies have shown that people who take adequate amounts of selenium/glutathione supplements along with maca do not develop goiter issues.
